I am pleased to post Show #46, my interview with Adjunct Prof. Larry Downes of U.C. Berkeley School of Information (and CIS Non-Resident Fellow) on business innovation. The genesis of this show was Larry’s blog post regarding parallels between the industrial and Internet revolutions. We discussed this post as well as the larger questions of whether the industrial revolution is indeed the proper comparator to our current changes. Larry is a great guest and scholar, so I hope that you enjoy the show!

Also, I’ll return to live-blogging next week at the Intellectual Property Scholars Conference, an amazing and extremely valuable conference for IP folks to present their works-in-progress and get feedback from their colleagues. I have been consistently impressed at how supportive the IP prof community is of new profs, and am grateful for their anticipated feedback on my current (very early) work-in-progress, “Incentivizing Government: The People’s Trade Secrets”. Of course, I welcome any comments from anyone who wants to take the time; you can email me at dave@hearsayculture.com.

Live-blogging will also allow me to pay closer attention and maybe offer some comments of my own. Unfortunately, since there are parallel sessions going for most of the conference, I will be unable to cover every presentation. I also intend to follow-up with some people about being guests on the show. So it will be a busy few days!

I’ll cross post the live-blog on my blog on the CIS website. Hope you find it useful!

I’m pleased to post Show #38, my interview with Tony Falzone, Director of the Fair Use Project (FUP) at Stanford Law School. The FUP is designed to address the challenges facing those who seek a vigorous fair use doctrine in copyright. I hope that you enjoy the interview, which focused on the hows and whys of fair use as well as some of the initiatives of the FUP. Disclaimer: Tony is one of my current bosses!

Additionally, I’ve mentioned on recent shows that I will be leaving Stanford and joining the faculty of the new Charlotte School of Law, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the Fall. I’m very excited about this opportunity, especially to jump into a new school in its second year of operation. I’ll be teaching (so far) contracts and intellectual property and will continue writing in the trade secrets/public life space.

I’m also pleased to report that I will remain affiliated with CIS and, of more importance to anyone reading this post, Hearsay Culture will continue unabated on KZSU as well as its other podcast venues. So this should be a seemless transition for you . . . as for me, it will be a very busy summer!

My semi-regular perusal of CIS’ iTunes pocast page, where you can find Hearsay Culture, has lead me to discover that iTunes is “featuring” the page under its “Podcasts: Education: Higher Education” section. As always, you should check the iTunes page (or its counterpart at the CIS’ homepage for non-iTunes users) for all of CIS’ wonderful podcasts, including Hearsay Culture and the Monday Speakers Series.

Enjoy these two options, and, for those of you looking for joy merely from a policy choice, enjoy some policy satisfaction by noting the freedom of having options! Now that’s satisfying!
